Can Morrisons really take on discount rivals Aldi and Lidl?
Good news for us maybe as Morrisons joins the discount wars.
I shop mainly at Aldi and complement it for my favourite branded goods at Co-op and Morrisons, so when Morrisons said today that they will be giving us more discounted products, that made me smile.
Sounds like Morrisons won’t become a discounter itself, but they said that “prices would … be just low enough that their fresh food and quality offers would be worthwhile.”
I already noticed their market street offers with some fruit and veg for 49 p including broccoli and cucumber, and this week saw 3 selected veg for £1.50 or 69p each.
Now if I could get a bigger value range at Morrisons, I wouldn’t bother with Aldi, but currently they don’t compare, and neither do the other supermarkets. You get …

Online poundshops – Poundshop.com vs Hereforapound.com a comparison
I recently compared online supermarkets, so I thought I would take a look at the new online pound shops. At the beginning of February, there was a media buzz around the new online discount stores. The major contenders were Poundshop.com, Hereforapound.com and Pound Panda. Now Pound Panda seems to have already exited the ring and its site is still down, so I decided to focus on the other two. My summary of pros and cons and my first impressions are below.
I have to admit that with two Pound Land shops within walking distance of my house (I am really lucky ;-)), I am not that tempted to shop online, however, for those that have to drive into town or want to buy a stack of stuff and use public transport, or for those …

Online pound shop on its way – Poundshop.com
I read with excitement this news about Poundland’s co-founder Steve Smith announcing his plans to launch the UK’s first online single price retailer. Basically bringing a pound shop online, is another convenient way to bag a bargain.
Poundshop.com will launch in the next 3 to 6 months, with a minimum order value of around £20 with a delivery charge on top (around £3), although the exact amount is yet to be decided. Smith justified the delivery cost as he pointed out that shoppers pay to get into town and parking.
There are rumours that Smith is working with discount retailer Poundworld to bring products from its stores to consumers and wholesalers online.
He told Retail Week magazine that he could keep his cost base low by securing good deals and will pass the savings on …

Betel shops for restored and overstock furniture at great prices
I stumbled upon the Betel charity after walking past one of its furniture shops. They have some lovely furniture, so today I popped in for a good browse, and also had some tea and pumpkin and ginger cake in their cafe.
One of the guys there, who had been helped by the charity, explained that the shop gets its stock from India, The Netherlands and France and they buy container loads, so can keep the prices low.
They also restore furniture and had lots of shabby chic products. The friendly guy explained that they have their own workshops so that’s why certain products were low cost. Finally, they get overstocks from department stores and when I popped in, they had stock from Debenhams.
A bit about the charity that the sales support, so that you …

Dispatches – The Secret of the Discount Stores – are they too good to be true?
Tonight I watched the Channel 4 programme on discount stores called The Secrets of the Discount stores, and it was interesting viewing.
Here’s my recap for those of you who may have missed it. Just to warn you, it did feel like a TK Maxx bashing exercise. As you may know, I am very fond of that store and will still be going there!
According to the programme, with the average Brit earning less than £450 a week and the recession biting, stores like TK Maxx are growing, with slogans such as Big Labels This Season, Always up to 60% less and this season’s trend.
A typical TK MAxx store holds 50,000 items and the presenter, Harry Wallop, showed items like a Jean Paul Gaultier mac for £350 down from £2,680. He examined how TK …

8 quick ways to save cash for Christmas
So who better to give tips to save money before Christmas? As well as me, of course ;-), there are plenty of firms out there that earn money from saving consumers money.
I like these tips from money saving specialist Gareth Robinson who heads up www.discountvouchers.co.uk, a site that offers discount vouchers and impartial money saving advice. Here are his top 8 tips on how to save cash in time for Christmas Day, with of course, a few of my own comments.
1. Go online
Get into the mind-set that you don’t need to pay full price for anything. If you see something you want, note the brand, the name, the barcode – then get online and search until you find it online somewhere cheaper. You may find a free delivery code, or a …

TK Maxx definitely won’t max out your credit card
What do you do when it is not sale season and you feel the need to shop, but without spending loads on a new outfit? Discount clothing stores such as TK Maxx are always a good bet to grab a fashion bargain, whatever time of year it is.
The TK Maxx discount store in particular is a favourite for fashion and price-savvy shoppers thanks to it offering big, designer labels and one-off items at up to 60 per cent discount. So, new season designer staples such as a Michael Kors studded jumper, normally priced from £145, cost you more like £87 while classic pieces – nay essentials – like Dolce & Gabbana’s Pony Skin Tote Bag, costing upwards of £1,000 brand new, can be snapped up from as little as £600, saving over £400.
Another …

My love for Poundland
When I was a young child my mother would take me around this horrid shop in town and along to the markets. Neither the shop nor the markets exist any more, instead car parks and Iceland have taken their place.
The horrid shop was managed by a ghastly and rude man who obviously thought that we were going to steal his precious trashy products. My mother took me as she must have inherited the bargain gene which I also have. She would look for cheap scourers and kitchen goods, biscuits and beans. I would follow behind in the hope that maybe I would get a nice ribbon or sweet.
Now today, that shop and market have morphed into Poundland for me. My secret pleasure. The town I live in is fairly nice with barber jackets …
