Reduce costs of kids’ parties with Argos Birthday Club
Argos has launched a one-stop party shop – The Birthday Club helps reduce the costs and take the stress out of children’s party planning
A dedicated online hub offers ideas, useful hints and tips and 20% (at the mo) off all party supplies and children’s gifts in a one-stop party shop.
I’ve had a look around and they allow you to search by party theme and age. Themes include films and colours. Then you get inspiration with party bag must haves, games and decoration packs. The online club also offers helpful hints and tricks such as suggestions on food for a first birthday day party, to a survival guide for hosting a party for five-year-olds.
They even have an under £10 party essentials section, with this 20 piece party kit at £6.49 – comes in …

School shirts for £5 per pack
Wouldn’t it be nice if kids only needed one pack of shirts per year? But no we have to have long sleeved and short sleeved and then they grow!
Anyway, I needed some short sleeved boys white school shirts, sized 13-14 or 13. They are not cheap! I looked at M&S – £6 – £12 for two, John Lewis – £8 – £14 for two, then Asda had no stock, neither did BHS, so I turned to Tesco. As I need six, I don’t really want to spend over £30 for school shirts. Now I have bought uniform from Tesco before and not been back in a few years. Quality didn’t cut it. I tended to buy uniform from Sainsburys, but they don’t sell it online.
But this time Tesco saved me and I …

Free entry to major attractions with Blue Peter badge
Master Bargain Hunter finally got his Blue Peter badge and as well as being extremely proud of him, I was well chuffed to see how much money we will be saving when visiting places like Warwick Castle, the Tower of London and Alton Towers as kids with Blue Peter badges get in for nothing.
Of course, your little un needs to put in some effort to get the badge and prove that they are worthy. In Master Bargain Hunter’s case, he got a green badge. His badge was awarded for sending in a letter (he had to write it by himself) and pictures (we used photos) of him doing activity that helps the environment. He was a beaver scout so did lots of things that qualified him for the badge, from building bug huts, going …

Halfords offers trade in on old bikes
Need a new bike, but want to sell your old one? Or need to simply just get rid of your old bike while getting a new one? Want to donate your bike to a good cause?
Well Halfords can probably help. They’ve teamed up with Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton to launch a national bike trade-in event for charity campaign.
Customers can donate unwanted bikes at any of Halfords’ 460 stores between Thursday, 16 and Monday, 20 April to receive 10% off a new bike – or simply donate a bike that is no longer needed. Bikes are then recycled and donated to communities in Africa to provide much needed transport.
Adult bikes are the most needed, but all bikes that are in a reasonable condition, including kids’ bikes, will be accepted provided they are complete …

Personalised birthday cake for £10
I wouldn’t want to subject my cakes on my children’s friends, but the average price of £40 for a decorated cake does seem a bit steep, and the standard Princess and Star Wars cakes that supermarkets sell don’t cut it with my children anymore. Also after Marks and Spencer discontinued its checkerboard cake, I have been in cake idea misery.
So what is a poor mum to do? Learn to ice properly? I am an award winning baker after all 😉 (award won at a bloggers event for best cake!). Or head down to Asda for its new super bargain Design a Cake service?
Last month, I tried out the Design a Cake for the princely sum of £10 for a 22 portion cake. The cake was chocolate and all I had to do …

Preparing for 11+ entrance exams without breaking the bank
We are lucky enough to live in an area that has great schools, both state and independent. But that doesn’t make the competition for places at the schools any less fierce.
Over the past few years, my kids’ peers have been going through the 11+ preparation process and I’ve learnt a thing or two, and who am I to deny you my knowledge? 😉
Here are some ways to get your child ready for entrance exams without breaking the bank.
1. DIY
I know, I know, you work full time and don’t have the spare time to help your darlings. But, I also know parents who work full time and have got their kids to go through preparation books (more on them later) and then gone through the answers with them. One set of working …

Lower cost stick in labels for clothes and shoes
The kids are growing fast and I need to buy (grrrrr) more clothes and accordingly label more clothes. I have been a Stikins‘ fan for a while, but am always on the look out for alternative products that provide the same quality but at a lower price….so to my delight I have found a company called Labels 4 Uniforms. The company sells iron-on name and stick-on name labels. I have tried the iron-on and stick-on and even after a few washes (hot for white shirts, and high spin for other clothes) the labels are staying put. I also used them for drinks bottles and their bags. The labels themselves are white with black writing and the company offers fun foot shaped label for shoes. They arrived within two days of order. I used … -
BerryClever community helps parents to cut costs
This is a bit different for me, but I liked the idea of it and decided to write about BerryClever – a social shopping site for new and expecting parents which aims to make online shopping more fun and interactive by giving parents the power to discover and choose products by reading and sharing honest advice from the people they can trust the most, their friends. Here is an interview with the guys behind the venture Emma Kafton and Kristi Flax. How does it work?
BerryClever has created a unique online environment, which allows you to connect with existing friends and new like-minded ones to discover the products they love, regret or simply can’t live without. You simply log onto the site to browse and discover new products, and read other parents’ reviews. BerryClever’s reviews, …

Refurbishment on a budget
Here are just some of the bargains that I have picked up for the refurb I mentioned a while back.
The front door is tiny, so the only way to get sofas in is through a window or build them in the house. We took the second option so turned to second hand Nabru sofas. Nabru is a cool brand of sofas that can fit into any space. The sofas new would have cost me close to £700 and we even managed to pick the green one up in our car! You can pick up sofas much, much cheaper especially on Facebook, but size and getting into the space is a problem for me. These sofas can be disassembled easily, you can reassemble them super quickly and you can buy new covers for them from …
