What is AirBNB?
I’ve been looking at travelling more this year, but even after cheap flight deals, the price of accommodation puts me off. So I’ve been looking at Airbnb – it’s an online community marketplace that connects people looking to rent their homes with people who are looking for accommodation. Property owners are called hosts who list and rent out their unused spaces, and travelers search for and book accommodation worldwide. The service may have started appealing to budget-conscious tourists, but now even business travelers are using the service. I already offer my parking space through JustPark where strangers park on my drive, so I see the appeal in making money from unused spaces and from a travellers point of view, a cheaper place to sleep than a hotel. Anyway, I’ve done a little bit of digging… -

9 ways to make your grocery shopping cheaper
From cash back apps, to making lists, here are some tips to making your grocery shopping cheaper.
Plan ahead and write a list
This is such a common sense piece of advice, but it works. Planning meals for the week ahead, checking what you already have and writing a list of what you need will increase your chances of only buying what you need and preventing overspending.
Use a supermarket comparison site
Mysupermarket.com is an independent site that allows users to shop across 9 stores to optimise their grocery shop. It does a lot of number crunching and analysis of information that it gathers, and that raw data is turned into digestible information that customers can use each time they shop.
Use cashback sites to redeem cash on everyday shopping
The UK’s two major cashback …

Free WiFi for York city centre
I thought you might be interested to hear that there is now free WiFi for all residents and visitors of York.
This initiative offers real money saving incentives to those wishing to travel to York, as well as long term saving for those working in the city.
York may be one of the most historic cities in the UK, but it is also fast becoming one of the most digitally connected with free unlimited WiFi now available across large parts of the city centre.
Free WiFi from CityConnect, provided by a company called Pinacl Solutions, can be accessed throughout many areas of the city, including key landmarks such as the historic York Minster, and at all six of the city’s Park & Ride terminals.
From cobbled street The Shambles to the famous York Dungeons, …

8 tips to save money in 2015
Happy New Year to you. Here’s what I will be doing as its worked in 2014!

Always use cash back sites
I use Topcashback and always check it for listed retailers when buying online. If the retailer is listed, and most are, you simple click from Topcashback’s website and your visit will be registered and shop as normal. Then after a few weeks, the cash back is credited to your account. I make hundreds a year doing this.

Shop ALDI for basics
I bake a lot and ALDI flour, sugars, jams and more are really competitively priced. For dry ingredients, ALDI can save you loads. I also buy milk, certain meats and veggies there. Most products are good quality and great value compared to the big four supermarkets.

Save money on a new car – haggling not necessary
Not all of us can afford a brand new car; that’s a fact. Even when 0% finance deals are taken into account, the monthly repayments are often still too high for many of us to afford.
Considering all the great finance deals available, however, there’s never been a better time to consider purchasing a brand new set of wheels. Recent analysis from an online platform that allows users to compare quotes for brand new cars found that, in some cases, cars ina used condition with a few thousand miles on the clock can actually often work out to be more expensive than buying that same model brand new. Why? Purely because of those finance deals I mentioned earlier.
It’s highly unlikely that you’ll ever get 0% finance on a used car, but plenty of manufacturers …

Save money when calling utility companies and your bank from your mobile phone
Are you moving house, changing banks or shopping around for a new deal on your insurance, gas and electric and want to avoid any nasty surprises on your mobile phone bill? Then I’ve found a new mobile phone service that could be of interest.
More and more of us are using our mobile phone to call utility companies and banks when on the move rather than waiting until we get home to use our landline and if you have just moved or a renting, you may not have a landline installed. So with many companies using 0800, 0808, 0870, 0845 and 03 numbers for their customer services team, we all risk extortionate and frustrating call charges, as it can cost up to 35p per minute to call these numbers from many Pay As You Go …

Online calendar of Xmas discounts for retailers, pubs and more
I was recently given a heads-up about a series of festive discounts coming from Voucher Express, which will give people everywhere a chance to scoop some money off at a number of big high street retailers.
The promotion is called ’12 Days of Christmas’ and from Monday, November 24 the doors of their online advent calendar will start to open and reveal new discounts. The contents of each door are a mystery at the moment, but I have been given some clues as to what they involve.
There are discounts at two high street jewellers, a nationwide restaurant chain, cash off at many pubs up and down the country, savings on luxury spa days, free cups of coffee at a well-known café brand, money off at two big chocolate companies, and more.

DIY divorce – saving money at a tough time
An odd post for a bargain hunter you may think, but I have two friends who have paid out a lot while getting divorced, and so am interested in finding advice for another two who are going through divorces now ;-(.
From the two recently divorced friends one paid £40,000 in solicitor’s fees to get her ex out of her house. The other got £4,000 out of a possible £30,000 because her legal costs took up the rest.
I got hold of a sort of bible I would say for all those divorcing, whether they DIY or not – DIY Divorce and Separation, an expert guide to representing yourself. It demystifies the legal process and provides the parties involved with the know-how and confidence to handle a divorce themselves or understand what your barrister …
