New free food sharing app – OLIO
I recently wrote about what to do with things you don’t want anymore, so was excited to hear about OLIO, a new free food sharing app enabling neighbours to connect with each other and with local shops and cafes so that good food can be shared, not thrown away.
The company’s mission is to enable people to unlock the value of food that is wasted in the home and local community – over £12.5 billion of edible food is binned every year in the UK alone!
The team is trying to change the way people think about food and their behaviour and routines around food. It’s a tall order but they’ve already had over 700 food items change hands since they launched in July in a small corner of North London. On Monday, …

What to do with things you no longer want
Recent images of the aftermath of the Reading Festival (see above) left me really exasperated. Why on earth would you do that? Have tents, bags, sleeping mats, clothes, boots, electronics become so cheap and unnecessary that you can’t be bothered to take them home with you?
Instead they are left for charities to salvage and send to Calais or other places that need them.
Waste is something that drives me CRAZY. Maybe it’s the bargain hunter in me that I can’t bare to throw anything away. That’s not to say that I hoard things, not at all, but if I can find a home for anything I own that I no longer want, I will do my best and this is how:
1. eBay – this month I have eBayed old fins, snorkels, Pokemon cards, …

Be your own guide – New Cities Talking app
I’m always looking for money saving apps, and here’s one that helps you to get to know a new town inexpensively and not be restricted to an organised tour.
The app saves travellers money on guide books and expensive guided tours when going to a new city. The app is free to download and then each tour is £4.99 within the app. Using your phone’s GPS means that the app doesn’t use any data while you are using it (as long as the tour itself was downloaded over WiFi) which means there are no costly data charges to using the app.
Each tour is voiced by a local celebrity and written by a local author – for example the London Tour was written by Kathy Lette and voiced by Christopher Biggins.
Using the app means …

Easy way to collect money owed from friends and family – Payfriendz app
Do you have that one friend who always gets away without paying for things? The one that dodges the taxi fare, leaves before it’s their round and opts for a salad before tucking into half your meal? Well, bill dodgers beware as there is a new app in town – Payfriendz.
Payfriendz is an app that provides an easy way to pay family and friends, as well as request money owed by them. It’s in-built messenger means that payments can be requested and sent to friends and family all within the same app. So no need to exchange bank details or awkward walks to the cash machine after that lovely meal out, just split the bill there and then.
Who is using it?
The app is also really handy for university students to split household …

bounts rewards you for exercising
Sometimes you just need a little bit of motivation to exercise. Well I may have found the answer. bounts aims to get members exercising for at least 20 minutes every day– the more you exercise, the more points (which are referred to as bounts) you receive. These bounts can then be redeemed in the ‘Shop’ for a variety of wonderful prizes, from House of Fraser gift cards to Sainsbury’s vouchers.
But how exactly does one earn bounts through exercise? Well having tried out the app, one earns bounts via; entering fitness venues, such as local gym facilities, by tracking activity on apps such as Fitbit, RunKeeper, MapMyFitness etc and by recording activity via web enabled gym equipment, from providers such as Life Fitness and Technogym.
All this activity is recorded via clever GPS and Bluetooth …

New travel app which makes life easier when you’re on the move
Now that the school holidays have started many of you will be jetting off on a summer holiday. There are plenty of apps on your mobile that aim to make your travels smoother whilst you’re mobile.
Whether it’s an app that saves you money, helps you pack, creates a holiday itinerary for you, or keeps all of your travel documents in one place, they all aim to help travellers improve their overall experience.
I just stumbled across a great app which will help you save time and money. The new Visa Travel Tools app gives you bundles of useful information such as the local weather forecast, a handy ATM locator and an easy-to-use currency converter so I can quickly find out how much my purchase actually costs in my home currency.
The exciting part is …

Do NOT accept your insurance renewal letter – I saved £98
I have been insured with esure for a few years and have built up a 12 year+ no claims discount, so when I received my car insurance renewal letter, it languished on my desk for a few days and then I called them to renew.
We had a lovely chat about any changes to my circumstances and then the nice gentleman gave me the renewal price – £272. Mmmmh, so chancing my arm, as I can’t resist, I reminded him of my no claims discount, loyalty to the firm and how annoying it was that my premium had gone up by £4 over the last year. Here was, in my opinion, his opportunity to give me some money off….even £10 would have made me more inclined not to take an alternative route…….but no – no …

Top hacks for spotting an antique gold mine
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure – truer words were never spoken for the owner of a Feuilles Fougeres vase, found in their attic. The vase was bought at a car boot sale in Dumfries for a costly £1 and used to home a house plant. When the well-known TV Show Antiques Roadshow came to town the owner took along the beloved vase only to find it was a 1929 Feuilles Fougeres piece from designer Rene Lalique which later sold at auction for £32,450.
It begs the question, how did the original boot-sale addict even notice it was an antique. They must have known it had some sort of value to take it to the Roadshow for valuation.
So how do you spot an antique? How can you make your millions from another’s rubbish? …
