Don’t chuck it, fix it with Sugru – the miracle fixing stuff
What is Sugru and how has it changed my life forever? Well both Mr BH and I are massive fans of Sugru, a sort of mouldable play dough that sets hard and can be used for stacks of things.
Sugru is malleable when removed from its airtight, moisture-proof packaging, which Mr BH keeps in the fridge. It hardens at room temperature and is malleable for 30 minutes, so he has a couple of jobs in mind before opening a packet. It comes in different colours too, we have yellow, red and black and picked it up at the Sugru website for £12.99 for 8 packs of Sugru. Smaller bundles are also available.
Sugru sticks to almost anything including aluminium, steel, copper, ceramics, glass, fabric, brass, leather and plywood.
His first use was stopping my soap …

Make money by hiring out your car
As you may know, I rent out my drive using Parkatmyhouse. In the last nine months, I have made £501, and that’s not full occupancy either.
So when I heard about a car lending service I had to take a look, especially as my car has only done 20,000 miles in seven years so stays idle much of the time.
easyCar Club, from the guy behind easyJet was launched earlier this month.
The service provides a way to make money from your car when not in use, and also, gives a cheaper alternative to renting a car through Hertz or the like. Londoners trialled easyCar club for the past year, and found that they made an average of £1,800 per year (£150 per month), up to £3,500 per year!
I definitely like the idea …

Cool money saving apps for freebies, price comparison, online selling, money transfer and going out
I have an iPhone and quite a few apps running on it, but I’m always looking out for more and thought I’d do a round up of some cool money saving and bargain hunting apps. idealo idealo is a a price comparison app, offering you on-the-go price information by comparing more than three million products – everything from pushchairs to smartphones to running shoes – and hundreds of online shops. It’s got some handy features:
- Barcode scanner – swipe the barcodes of items they seen out and about and immediately compare online prices.
- Pricewatcher feature which enables shoppers to enter their target price for a particular item, and receive an email notification when the product reaches the desired price.
- Favourites list to easily share popular items with friends and family.

Protect yourself legally when making extra money
It’s that time of year again when money is tight and time is sparse and there’s only so much we can squeeze out of our income, so why not turn to other ways of making a bit of extra cash.
But beware, if you are renting your car parking space, working from home or taking in a lodger, you still need to protect yourself and one way is to draw up some legal documents to cover you in case of a misunderstanding later on.
There’s an online firm legal firm called Rocket Lawyer and they have stacks of legal documents to download. The first document is free and there’s a three day trial where you can take a look at other documents, so it’s worth a search around on their site.
Here are some ideas …

Save money on supermarket wine with a personal wine expert app – Wotwine
Now I must admit when I go to the supermarket, I choose the wines that are knocked down from £9.99 to £4 or £5. I figure that if it costs so much in the first place, it must taste good.
I like dry white wine and rose, but couldn’t name a good grape to save my life and when I get to the supermarket, I am faced with a confusing array of wines and prices.
That’s when I discovered wotwine a brand spanking new supermarket wine app. The free to download app helps determine whether a “deal” is in fact a real deal and can help you save money on supermarket wine.
You simply scan a bottle barcode in a supermarket and the app throws up all kinds of information: the quality, but most importantly …

Make money – see what unwanted things I have sold on eBay
Now I love to grab a bargain on eBay, but I don’t like to use use “my” money to do it.
So to pay for my eBay purchases, I also sell on eBay and at the moment I have 10 items listed as now is the perfect time to sell, especially as buyers are looking for presents.
I don’t like clutter (much) and try to rid myself of stuff that is lying idle in a cupboard somewhere on a regular basis…maybe once a week if I have the time. I could list anything between two and ten items. I mostly list from my phone as it’s quicker.
I search for other similar items in the completed items tab to determine the price at which I’ll sell.
Since July I have sold quite a lot …

$5 for a logo design, with Fiverr it is!
Do you like my logo? Well I used Fiverr for cheap logo design. For some initial concepts I paid $5 and for the worked up design $35. Well what do you expect? I hunt for bargains after all.
My logo designer is in Japan, but I have worked with people in the Philippines and the US.
My route to Fiverr came via Freelancer.com. Many moons ago, it was called Getafreelancer. I was setting up my business, but needed help at a low cost. I used GetAfreelancer to find admin support help and some design help, but on the whole, the admin people didn’t know what they were doing and the design work was pretty terrible, so I turned to UK designers. Unfortunately, they were often too expensive…..that’s when I found Fiverr.
Basically, I post up …

Get paid to shop with Top CashBack
A website that pays you money as you shop, now I wasn’t sure at first, but what did I have to lose?
I was already signed up to Quidco. While I did use Quidco for two years and got paid £732, I did have to pay for the privilege, so I switched. BTW, the amount is high as I brought quite a few electricals and expensive bits of gear.
I came across Top CashBack and made the move. There are other similar sites around, but Top CashBack doesn’t charge you. It makes money from ads, whereas sites like Quidco charge, if only a little bit, but it’s a charge and I like things for free. I hear that now, however, that Quidco has also introduced a free service, so that may be worth checking out.…

Cut the cost of rail travel
So I travel by train a lot especially to London. The fares have rocketed over the last few years, with a return going up £17. This increase really irks me.
I’ve found a number of ways to cut the cost of rail travel and keep journey costs down:
- Book your ticket in advance – advance can mean as late as 11.59 pm the day before travel. Advance tickets are not as flexible, and if you miss the train you could end up paying for a single fare home but if you know meeting times, this is a great option. Seats become available twelve weeks before travel for the cheapest fares….which is useful if you are doing regular journeys.
- Buy two singles – sometimes it can be cheaper than a return, since you may travel one
